According to a recent report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple plans to incorporate live translation capabilities into its AirPods lineup. This feature, which will allow users to translate conversations in real time, is expected to be integrated with the upcoming iOS 19 release.
The live translation function would work by translating speech from another language into the language of the AirPods wearer. For example, if someone speaks Spanish, the AirPods would play an English translation to the wearer. When the AirPods user responds in English, their iPhone would then play the Spanish translation through its speakers.
This development comes years after Google introduced similar functionality to its Pixel Buds line. Google first implemented live translation in its original Pixel Buds in 2017 and later expanded the feature to the Pixel Buds Pro in 2022. Other companies including Meta and Humane have also experimented with live translation in wearable devices, though with mixed results in terms of accuracy and performance.
The addition of translation features to AirPods appears to be part of Apple's broader strategy to enhance its audio products with new capabilities. This news comes shortly after Apple announced delays to its AI-enhanced Siri features, stating that development is taking longer than anticipated.
Apple is also reportedly working on significant design changes for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS this year, according to the same Bloomberg report. Apple has not yet responded to requests for comment on these developments.
