Apple has submitted a patent application to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office describing a novel "wearable electronic device" that could transform the future of its smartwatch line. The patent details a watch featuring dual movable screens and integrated cameras.
According to the filing, this conceptual device would include a display that can be folded for compactness or expanded when users desire additional screen real estate. The patent documentation includes various technical illustrations demonstrating potential mechanisms for the movable screens.
One design shows a hinged configuration, while another depicts a secondary screen that flips out from the main display. A third variation features two screens operating with an adjustable panel system.
In explaining the practical applications, Apple notes that different screen configurations would serve various user needs. The expanded display might benefit those using their watch for video calls, gaming, or web browsing, whereas the compact form would remain practical for everyday activities and outdoor use.

The patent also reveals plans for dual cameras integrated into the foldable screen system, potentially enabling users to capture photos or participate in FaceTime video calls directly from their wrist. The technical documentation specifically mentions the inclusion of "sensors, lights, [and] cameras" within the device architecture.
Whether this foldable watch concept will eventually become a commercial product remains uncertain. Apple regularly files numerous patents, many of which never progress beyond the conceptual stage. Industry observers have noted that the company's rumored foldable iPhone, potentially slated for a 2026 release, may take development precedence over this watch design.
