After a six-year wait, Beats has released the successor to its Powerbeats Pro sports earphones. The new Powerbeats Pro 2 introduces heart rate monitoring capabilities and extends battery life to 45 hours, while reducing the charging case size by a third.

The most notable addition is the dual heart rate monitoring system, with sensors in each earbud. These monitors use LED optical technology to measure blood flow, similar to the Apple Watch but miniaturized to 1/16th of the size. For accurate readings, users need to wear both earbuds simultaneously.

At launch, the heart rate monitoring feature integrates with fitness apps including Peloton, Runna, Nike Run Club, Open, Slopes, Ladder, and YaoYao. The absence of Strava compatibility has been noted by early reviewers.

The earphones now include active noise cancellation, addressing a notable omission from the 2019 model. A transparency mode allows users to hear their surroundings when needed, while adaptive EQ adjusts audio output based on environmental conditions. The charging case supports wireless charging – a first for Beats – and provides up to 45 hours of total listening time.

Apple's H2 chip, currently used in AirPods Pro 2, powers the new Powerbeats Pro. The earphones carry an IPX4 rating for sweat and water resistance, making them suitable for use in various weather conditions, though not fully waterproof.

The redesigned earhooks are 20% lighter than the previous version and use a nickel titanium alloy for improved flexibility. Beats reports testing the design with nearly 1,000 athletes and now includes five eartip sizes for a more customizable fit.

The Powerbeats Pro 2 comes in four colors: Electric Orange, Jet Black, Quick Sand, and Hyper Purple. They are available through Beats' website and Apple stores, priced at £249.95 GBP / $249.99 USD.

Technical Specifications:

  • Battery life: 45 hours total with case
  • Charging case: 33% smaller than previous model
  • Water resistance: IPX4 rating
  • Processor: Apple H2 chip
  • Earhook: 20% lighter, nickel titanium alloy construction
  • Included accessories: Five sizes of eartips
