Donald Glover
As an actor, he starred in popular TV shows like Community and Atlanta. As a musician, he gained fame as the Grammy-winning artist Childish Gambino. Now, after more than a decade, Childish Gambino is retiring.
Gambino’s final album, Bando Stone & The New World, has been released, marking the end of a 13-year chapter in Glover’s creative journey. This album follows Atavista, released two months prior, which he described as the "finished version" of his 2020 album 3.15.20.
The lead single Lithonia gave fans a preview earlier this month. To create Bando Stone, Gambino collaborated with artists like Chlöe, Flo Milli, Amaarae, and Jorja Smith. The album also serves as the soundtrack for an upcoming film of the same name.
In an interview with The New York Times, Glover explained his decision to retire the Childish Gambino persona, saying it was simply time to move on. He felt it was no longer fulfilling and didn’t need to continue in that direction.
The Bando Stone film revolves around a musician recording his masterpiece on a remote island as the world descends into chaos. Glover found the concept of creating music without knowing its purpose to be a compelling journey, reflecting a universal experience of questioning the meaning of one’s efforts.
Gambino will embark on The New World Tour this summer and fall to promote the project. This tour will be a heartfelt farewell to the persona, featuring music designed for live performances.
"To me, success means creating an album that I genuinely enjoy and would listen to myself," he said. "With this album, my goal was to craft big, anthemic songs that resonate in large venues, bringing people together and creating a shared experience."
