After nearly thirty years at the helm, Donatella Versace is stepping down from her role as creative director of Versace, confirming rumors that have been circulating for some time. The fashion house, founded by her brother Gianni in 1978, will now enter a new chapter under different leadership.
Dario Vitale, who previously served as Design Director and Brand Image Director at Miu Miu, will take over creative direction of the brand. Vitale brings his substantial experience to Versace at what industry observers consider a pivotal moment for the luxury fashion house.
"It has been the greatest honor of my life to carry on my brother Gianni's legacy. I am excited to see Versace through new eyes," Donatella stated in the announcement.
Despite stepping back from creative duties, Donatella will maintain ties with the company in her new position as "chief brand ambassador". This arrangement allows her to keep her image connected to the fashion house while transferring responsibility for collections and brand image to the new designer. She will also continue to oversee the Versace Foundation, focusing on philanthropic initiatives and charitable projects.
The transition marks a significant change for the Italian luxury brand, which has been synonymous with Donatella's vision since she took over following her brother's tragic death in 1997. During her tenure, she preserved the brand's distinctive aesthetic while adapting to changing fashion landscapes and expanding the company's global presence.
Industry analysts note that this leadership change comes at a time when many established luxury brands are refreshing their creative direction to appeal to younger demographics and navigate evolving consumer preferences in the luxury sector.
