GLENN MARTENS IS THE NEW CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF MAISON MARGIELA

Belgian designer Glenn Martens has been appointed creative director at Maison Margiela, marking a new chapter for the Paris-based fashion house. The 41-year-old succeeds John Galliano, who stepped down from his position in December 2023.

OTB Group president Renzo Rosso announced the appointment, citing his long-standing professional relationship with Martens. "Having worked with Glenn over the years, I've witnessed his talent firsthand and understand his capabilities", Rosso said. "Following Martin Margiela, who established the house and its one-of-a-kind Artisanal line, and John Galliano, who transformed it into a leading force in contemporary fashion, I'm pleased to welcome a third couturier to guide the maison".

Martens shares an educational background with the house's founder, having studied at Antwerp's Royal Academy of Fine Arts. His appointment brings his experience from Y/Project, where he served as creative director since 2013, and Diesel, where he has held the same position since 2020. During his tenure at both brands, he demonstrated his ability to blend experimental design with commercial appeal.

The designer's background in deconstructionist fashion and his technical expertise align with Maison Margiela's heritage of avant-garde design and craftsmanship. His appointment comes at a time when the fashion industry is seeing significant leadership changes at major houses.

The house has not yet announced when Martens will present his first collection for Maison Margiela. His arrival follows nearly a decade of creative direction under Galliano, who joined the house in 2014.
