The adidas BW Army, Hartcopy's take on the German Army Trainer (GAT), is now available for orders across Europe and the UK. The collaboration's global retail expansion is set for next week, following its initial limited release in February.
In a recent discussion, Hartcopy co-owner Sam Le Roy shared the story behind the partnership. The project began with a chance meeting in London with Hugo, an industry contact who helped connect the team with adidas.
The design keeps the GAT's signature elements while introducing subtle changes. "We maintained the classic shape, including the gummy sole and two-tone uppers", Le Roy said. "The main change was replacing the suede T-toe with nubuck panels". The shoes feature asymmetric Hartcopy branding between the left and right feet.
Le Roy emphasized the historical significance of their version. "People often discuss Replicas, but this collaboration presents the authentic GAT", he noted. The project aligns with Hartcopy's focus on providing context for both contemporary and heritage footwear.
The shoe features a white leather upper with subtle gray accents on the toe and heel. The right shoe displays a red embroidered line on its side – a reference to Hartcopy's logo, which also appears on the sockliner. The left shoe carries the same line near the toe. A gum sole with adidas Originals branding completes the design.
Looking ahead, Hartcopy plans to expand its role in sneaker culture through product releases and community events. While specific pricing details remain under wraps, Le Roy hinted at a March release with a playful note about "free pairs for lucky individuals worldwide".
The GAT design has influenced numerous brands, with Maison Margiela's Replica Sneaker perhaps the most recognized in fashion circles. adidas' BW Army, though less widely available than icons like the Samba, draws directly from the company's German roots.
Interested buyers can currently purchase the shoes through European and UK online channels. Details about wider availability and pricing for other regions will be announced through Hartcopy and adidas channels.
