IKEA continues its exploration of design heritage with the upcoming sixth installment of the Nytillverkad collection, a series that breathes new life into furniture designs from the 1960s through the 1980s. The collection, set to launch in February 2025, includes eight carefully selected pieces that capture the essence of mid-century and late 20th-century design.

The spotlight falls on the BYAKORRE shelving unit (previously known as GUIDE), a piece that has gained particular attention among vintage furniture enthusiasts. Originally designed by Niels Gammelgaard in 1985, the shelves have become a sought-after item on vintage resale platforms. The 2025 version introduces a subtle twist: one side features multicolored edging, while the other remains white, offering users flexibility in styling.

Gammelgaard, reflecting on the design's enduring appeal, noted the importance of creating pieces that resonate across generations. "The true measure of design is its ability to remain relevant and appreciated over time," he explained.

The collection spans various categories, showcasing the diversity of IKEA's design archives:

Seating Highlights:

  • MOFALLA (originally COX, 1978): A foldable living room chair featuring a robust canvas fabric stretched over metal legs.

Karin Gustavsson, creative leader of the Nytillverkad collection, emphasized the collection's approach: "We've drawn inspiration from four decades, reimagining these pieces to feel contemporary while maintaining their original character. The collection offers a palette that ranges from bold colors to softer, more nuanced tones".

The reissue represents more than mere nostalgia. It reflects a broader trend of sustainable design, giving well-crafted pieces a second life and introducing them to a new generation of design enthusiasts.

The sixth launch of the Nytillverkad collection will be available at IKEA stores globally and online starting in February 2025.
