Morocco has unveiled plans for the construction of the Grand Stade de Casablanca, set to become the world's largest stadium upon completion.
With an awe-inspiring capacity of 115,000 spectators, this monumental structure is poised to redefine the standards of sports architecture globally.
The Grand Stade de Casablanca is destined to be a centerpiece venue for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. This tri-nation hosting arrangement marks a historic moment for African football, with Morocco becoming the first North African country to co-host the prestigious tournament.
The project's design phase has been entrusted to a consortium led by the renowned architectural firm Oualalou + Choi, in collaboration with Populous, a global leader in sports and entertainment architecture. Populous boasts an impressive portfolio, including iconic structures such as London's Wembley Stadium, Arsenal's Emirates Stadium, Benfica's Estádio da Luz, and Tottenham Hotspur's state-of-the-art home ground.

The selection process for the design team was rigorous and extensive. Initially, twelve candidates were shortlisted, which was subsequently narrowed down to seven in December 2023, and further refined to five contenders in early 2024. The final decision was made by Morocco's National Agency for Public Facilities (ANEP), paving the way for the commencement of this ambitious project.
Situated on a vast 100-hectare plot in the Benslimane province, the stadium's location has been strategically chosen. Its positioning between Casablanca and Mohammedia, coupled with proximity to Mohammed V International Airport, ensures optimal accessibility for both domestic and international visitors.
The Grand Stade is envisioned as more than just a sports venue. The surrounding area will feature a comprehensive complex of facilities, potentially transforming it into a multifaceted sports hub capable of hosting a diverse range of events and tournaments.
With an estimated budget of 411 million euros, the project represents a significant investment in Morocco's sporting future. However, ANEP's vision extends beyond mere size and cost. The agency aims to create a truly unique structure that will maintain its relevance and distinctiveness long after the World Cup concludes.
The Grand Stade de Casablanca is set to become a new benchmark in sports architecture, not just for Africa but for the entire world. Its innovative design, cutting-edge facilities, and sheer scale are expected to inspire future stadium projects globally.
As construction begins, anticipation builds for what promises to be a game-changing addition to the world of sports infrastructure. The Grand Stade de Casablanca stands as a testament to Morocco's ambition and its commitment to leaving an indelible mark on the international sporting landscape.
