After decades of international showings, American artist Nate Lowman will present his first solo exhibition in Japan this spring. "This Neighborhood's Changed" opens at Tokyo's Gallery Common from April 26 through May 25, featuring a curated selection of both established works and new pieces.
Matt Black, the New York-based founder of REFLECTIONS art platform, has curated the exhibition to showcase the evolution of Lowman's distinctive artistic approach. Visitors will encounter Lowman's recognizable bullet hole canvases and Edvard Munch-inspired works alongside fresh creations, including pieces that incorporate imagery from American golf courses and hurricane satellite photographs.
The exhibition description notes how Lowman's pop-influenced visuals blend humor with social commentary, challenging viewers to reconsider familiar imagery from contemporary culture. Since emerging in the early 2000s, the Las Vegas-born, New York-based artist has become known for transforming mass cultural symbols like smiley faces and hearts into contemplative art pieces.
Fashion enthusiasts may recognize Lowman from his previous collaborations with streetwear brand Supreme, which include a T-shirt design for the opening of Supreme's Shibuya location in 2012 and a capsule collection released in 2022.
An opening reception with the artist will take place on April 25 from 7-9 p.m. at Gallery Common, located in Shibuya at Jingumae 5-39-6 B1F, Tokyo 150-0001.
