Italian fashion house Prada has partnered with Axiom Space to design the next generation spacesuit for NASA's Artemis III lunar mission.

The collaboration, unveiled at the International Astronautical Congress in Milan, marks the first time a luxury fashion brand has contributed to spacesuit development.

The new Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) suit aims to enhance astronaut comfort and mobility during lunar exploration. While the operational version will be white to reflect heat, the prototype showcased Axiom and Prada branding.

Prada's involvement centered on materials science and tailoring expertise. The company worked to develop high-performance fabrics for thermal protection and dust resistance. Innovative seam construction techniques were employed to improve flexibility and range of motion.

A key focus was expanding the range of available sizes to accommodate diverse body types more effectively. This adaptability is intended to facilitate astronaut movement and task performance on the lunar surface.

The AxEMU incorporates specialized tools for exploring the moon's south polar region. Improvements over previous designs include enhanced flexibility, efficiency, and safety features. The suit is engineered to withstand extreme temperatures and includes integrated diagnostic systems, carbon dioxide removal, and life support capabilities.

Axiom Space president Matt Ondler stated that the partnership "sets a precedent for reimagining collaborations across industries". For Prada, the project represents an expansion beyond traditional fashion boundaries.

This joint development between Axiom Space and Prada may inform future spacesuit designs for other missions beyond the moon.
