1. Introduce Yourself to the Casawi Community: What drives you? What's your artistic vision, and what sets you apart from the crowd?
I am Satoshi Kawamoto, a plant artist with a deep-rooted passion for flora. Born and raised in Japan, my life's mission is to revolutionize the way people perceive and interact with plants.
As the creative director of boutiques in Tokyo, New York, and Milan, I navigate through a diverse spectrum of design disciplines. My work transcends mere greenery; I craft immersive sets for fashion runways, curate events, and specialize in interior and plant styling for upscale department stores and hotel dining venues.
My affinity for vintage fashion runs deep—I meticulously curate a collection of global finds, not only to cherish but also to share through sales at my atelier and online platform. Recently, I've ventured into the realm of customizing apparel, capturing the hearts of fashion aficionados with my unique aesthetic.
2. City Inspirations: How has your city influenced your artistic path? Share how its streets, culture, and energy have molded your work.
I hail from Tokyo, where I spent my formative years. However, the desire to share my perspective with a more diverse audience prompted me to relocate abroad. The myriad languages, the architectural diversity, and the culinary delights—each element fuels my creativity, especially when it challenges my preconceived notions of normalcy. The response to my work varies remarkably from place to place, reflecting the unique cultural landscapes.
3. Creative Process: What fuels your creativity? Whether it's a ritual, a muse, or a moment of clarity, we're keen to learn.
My creative muse often emerges from realms beyond flora. It is the vistas of new locales where I reside or journey to, the gastronomy I savor, and the local fashion that truly ignite my inspiration, not merely the insights from those who cultivate plants. This journey I’ve embarked upon feels correct, as my mind ceaselessly gathers and stores these sparks of creativity. Although some inspirations may diminish with time, I am convinced that this pursuit will be a lifelong endeavor.
4. City Lifestyle and Art: How the places you lived influenced your career and work?
Residing in metropolises from Tokyo to New York and Milan has taught me that each city possesses its own merits and demerits. Yet, one cannot fully grasp them without witnessing firsthand; there’s a profound difference between reading about a place and immersing oneself in its reality. The Japanese often exhibit a reticence to disclose the full picture, particularly the negatives, hinting at an understated elegance. It is through inhabiting various locales and absorbing the candid perspectives of their inhabitants that I’ve come to understand what truly resonates with people and elicits exclamations of amazement.
5. Latest or Upcoming Projects: Give us a glimpse into your current endeavors and what lies ahead on your creative journey.
Allow me to offer a preview of my ongoing projects and the future trajectory of my artistic voyage. I am fervently working on multiple initiatives for the upcoming fashion week and various events. The anticipation builds as I eagerly await the moment I can unveil them.
My aspiration is to showcase the fascinating confluence of botany, fashion, interior decor, and gastronomy in a manner that is uniquely my own.
While the demand for bespoke vintage attire outpaces supply, rest assured that a succession of novel creations is on the horizon. Stay tuned for the latest updates.
