The “slumbering” painting, deemed by many as the most significant art discovery in the last thirty years, will grace the National Museum of Prado for the coming nine months. Specifically, until October 13, it will be showcased alone in a dimly-lit room designed to enhance its vivid colors and the characteristic chiaroscuro of Caravaggio.

The Prado is currently home to this privately owned masterpiece which, following its discovery at Madrid’s Ansorena auction house in 2021, was declared by the Spanish public administration and, by law, cannot leave national territory except for exhibition-related travel. Thanks to the generosity of the new owner, an anonymous British collector residing in Mediterranean Andalusia who reportedly invested around 30-36 million euros for the precious canvas, the “Ecce Homo” makes its public debut, not before undergoing extensive studies and meticulous restoration that has brought back its original appearance.
